The Economist magazine last week carried an article about the failure of one of the leading lights of the US CDFI sector: Chicago-based ShoreBank. The article describes the CDFI as an ‘experiment’ that went wrong – but says that its failure might have been avoided with greater geographical diversification and a different mix of lending (with less for home ownership and more for small businesses). The rest of the US sector, the article reports, is ‘stronger than ever’.
